Wümmekalender 2020: WELL SHELTERED
The Wümmecalendar 2020 wants to accompany you WELL SHELTERED through the year.
Best known are the parasols and the umbrellas. They are first mentioned in Europe at about the year 800. In the beginning they were produced of wood and waterproof canvas which made them big and heavy. Lighter and foldable umbrellas became fashionable accessories for women at the beginning of the 18th century.
Umbrellas exist wordwide. They vary from culture to culture: the Indian parasols, the parasols on the beaches of the Costa del Sol and the huge parasol in the ice cream parlour or the sheltered harvest.
The use of umbrellas and parasols is related to sun and rain. This brings to mind the current concerns about the dramatic changes of the worldwide climate. The different functions of umbrellas – like to shelter or to screen - can be a a symbol for different aspects of life.
related to many things in life - the umbrella can be of wonderful symbolism.
